New research uncovers early-life risks behind separation-related behaviours
SRBs (Separation-Related Behaviours) include: 🐾Pacing 🐾Whining 🐾Scratching 🐾Barking 🐾Accidents indoors These affect around 50% of dogs!
📍 Conducted by the Royal Veterinary College 🐾 In collaboration with Dogs Trust 📊Based on data from 145 UK & Irish puppy owners 💡Part of the Generation Pup project
🍼 Nearly 47% of puppies showed signs of SRBs by just 6 months old! 💔 These early habits can shape lifelong behaviour.
Most common when left alone: 1️⃣Pacing – 14.5% 2️⃣Whining – 7.6% 3️⃣Spinning – 6.9% 😟Stress is real for pups!
❌ Scolding, smacking, or harsh discipline = more SRBs ✔️Positive reinforcement helps pups stay calm & confident
😴 Puppies with good overnight sleep were less likely to develop SRBs 🔒Restricted sleep areas like crates or quiet rooms were beneficial
💔 Fussing over unwanted behaviour after separation? ➡️ Puppies were 6x more likelyto show SRBs 📣 Stay calm and consistent!
🚫 Poor house training 🚫Using treats/kibble incorrectly 🤯 Can increase anxiety and unwanted behaviours
👩🦱 Owners aged 16–34 were linked to higher SRB risk 🤷♂️Breed and sex? No major effect
“Punishing or ignoring puppies is linked to more separation-related behaviour later.” – Dr. Charlotte Burn, RVC ✔️ Use rewards and praise thoughtfully
🧠 Early experiences matter! 💛 Gentle, positive, consistent training = happier, more independent pups 📚 Learn more at Dogs Trust or RVC
